Frozen berry products sold at Walmart and Trader Joe's in Ohio have been recalled over possible E. coli contamination.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted an expanded recall notice on Friday, Oct. 2, from Chilean producer Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. Three frozen organic products are affected:

  • Great Value Organic Triple Berry Blend (10 oz), UPC 7874211226, lot codes 6 031 01 and 6 041 01. Best If Used By dates: Jan. 31, 2028, and Feb. 10, 2028. Lot code is printed on the front of the package.
  • Great Value Organic Blueberries (10 oz), UPC 7874211213, lot codes 6 019 01, 6 040 01 and 6 163 01. Best If Used By dates: Jan. 19, 2028; Feb. 9, 2028; and June 12, 2028. Lot code is printed on the front of the package.
  • Trader Joe's Organic Mixed Berry Blend (12 oz), UPC 00977654, lot code 6 051 01. Best Before date: Feb. 20, 2028. Lot code is printed on the back of the package.

The Great Value products were shipped to Walmart stores in 30 states including Ohio. The Trader Joe's blend reached stores in 26 states including Ohio. Both retailers have locations in the West Chester and Liberty Township area, though the recall is statewide and does not name specific stores.

Shoppers who find a matching product should not eat it. They can discard it or return it to the store for a full refund, the recall notice states.

The concern is E. coli O145:H28, a strain of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. The FDA says it can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea that may be bloody, and vomiting.

Young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems face the highest risk of serious complications, including a condition called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Symptoms can appear up to nine days after eating contaminated food.

No illnesses have been reported in Ohio. A related outbreak investigation that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) declared over on Sept. 21 linked 17 infections to frozen blueberries from the same producer. All 17 cases were in Florida and Georgia. Six people were hospitalized, and no deaths were reported.

The Oct. 2 expansion is the third recall action by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. The company first recalled GreenWise-brand organic blueberries sold at Publix on July 3 after the Florida Department of Health flagged an illness cluster. A second expansion followed on Sept. 3.

The FDA says the latest round is a precautionary step based on traceback information linking the newly recalled products to the blueberries in the original recall. The agency has placed the company's frozen blueberries on Import Alert 99-35, meaning shipments may be detained at the U.S. border without physical examination.

Because the recalled products carry Best By dates in 2028, they may still be sitting in home freezers. WLWT first reported on the expanded recall on Saturday, Oct. 3. Shoppers with questions can contact the company's media representative, Joshua Weiss, at [email protected] or 336-899-5612, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST.
