Lakota East High School juniors can take the PSAT for free this fall, but their families must sign up by Friday, August 21.

Registration for the October 2026 PSAT/NMSQT closes that day, just one week after classes begin at the Liberty Township school. For juniors, the exam doubles as the qualifying test for National Merit Scholarships, a program that awards more than $180 million annually. The Lakota Local School District is covering the full cost for 11th-graders.

Freshmen and sophomores can also register but will pay an $18 fee. The exam gives younger students a preview of the SAT format, generates personalized practice recommendations, and provides insights into readiness for Advanced Placement courses, according to the school's announcement posted Monday.

What the test covers

The PSAT assesses reading, writing, and math. It lasts 2 hours and 45 minutes, with a top score of 1520. Lakota East will administer the exam Tuesday, October 20, during the school day. Students not testing will follow a delay schedule.

Tight timeline

Lakota East's staggered start days fall on Thursday, August 13, for students with last names A-L, and Friday, August 14, for last names M-Z, according to a July 10 message from Principal Matt MacFarlane. That gives families roughly one week of school before the registration window shuts.

How to register

Students sign up through an online Google Form linked on the Lakota East school news page. The school encourages students to consult a counselor if they're unsure whether the PSAT fits their academic plan.

The registration form is open through Friday, August 21. The exam takes place Tuesday, October 20.
