When Lakota West hosts St. Xavier on Friday, Aug. 21, to open the 2026 football season, the Bombers will arrive carrying the reflected glow of their most famous graduate's biggest month yet.

St. Xavier's Luke Kuechly will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, Aug. 8, in Canton. And as of this week, he has a new job: Netflix's lead NFL game analyst for the 2026 season, The Athletic reported on Tuesday.

He'll call four of Netflix's five games alongside play-by-play announcer Noah Eagle, debuting Thursday, Sept. 10, when the Los Angeles Rams face the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia.

"That guy has studied more film than days the average fan has lived," St. Xavier coach Steve Specht told WCPO 9 Sports in a text message Tuesday night. "He'll be phenomenal! Just great!"

From Specht's office to Canton

Kuechly's film obsession started at St. Xavier. Specht gave the teenage linebacker a key to his office so he could watch game film on the DVD player whenever he wanted. So many teammates followed Kuechly into the room that Specht eventually had to find somewhere else to work, according to a Panthers feature published ahead of the induction.

As a junior in 2007, Kuechly recorded 147 tackles and 6.0 sacks on a Bombers squad that went 15-0 and won the Ohio Division I state championship at Fawcett Stadium in Canton. That title game was played next door to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, where he'll be enshrined Aug. 8.

He became a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, five-time All-Pro, the 2013 NFL Defensive Player of the Year (the youngest winner ever), and helped the Carolina Panthers reach Super Bowl 50. He retired in January 2020 at age 28 due to concussions after eight NFL seasons.

Kuechly is just the third Greater Cincinnati high school football player elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, joining Roger Staubach (Purcell, 1985 inductee) and Cris Carter (Middletown, 2013 inductee).

What it means for Aug. 21

The Firebirds will face a St. Xavier program riding serious momentum. The Bombers went 11-3 and reached the Division I state final in 2025, and they're ranked No. 7 in Cleveland.com's preseason poll, returning five defensive starters led by junior end Griffin Lyons.

Lakota West went 7-5 in 2025 and returns senior quarterback Jackson Smith, Louisville-committed tight end Xavier Ratica, and Iowa-committed lineman Reilly Newman. As reported July 28, the Firebirds believe they're flying under the radar this preseason.
