Lakota East's boys cross country team placed 17th out of 28 teams at the Troy Twilight Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 19. Flooding forced organizers to shorten the course to 4 kilometers, a last-minute change that altered the race for every team in the field.

Junior Jacob Turner led the Thunderhawks, finishing 20th overall in 13:06.4, according to the team's official site. Turner has been East's top runner all fall. At the Little Miami Invitational, he finished ninth in 17:08.9 over the standard 5K distance, helping the Thunderhawks place 10th in that field. His 4K split at Troy Twilight is difficult to compare directly to that 5K mark, but his 20th-place finish in a 28-team field kept him near the front of a much larger pack.

The return of sophomore Dan Kim may matter more for what comes next. Kim had missed the past few meets and ran 14:42.4 at Troy Twilight. The team site described the effort as "an equivalent season-best performance," though it did not explain how the 4K time compared to Kim's earlier results at the standard distance. The nature of Kim's injury was not disclosed.

Having Kim back gives head coach Jack Barchet another scoring option as the schedule picks up. Barchet's staff includes assistant coaches Gwen Meiring, Chaz Meyer and Carey Ware.

The shortened course created unusual conditions across the meet. The Sidney Daily News reported that Sidney finished 16th and Botkins finished 23rd in the same field, confirming the flooding affected the entire event.

The 17th-place result is a drop from East's 10th-place showing at Little Miami. The Troy Twilight field was nearly three times larger, though, and the 4K distance makes side-by-side comparison unreliable.

East returns to competition Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Fairmont Firebird Invite in Fairmont, Ohio. The Northmont XC Invite follows on Oct. 3.
