Lakota East sophomore Alyssa Brown finished seventh overall at the Little Miami Invitational on Sept. 13 with a time of 20:23.8, leading the Thunderhawks girls cross country team to a ninth-place team finish among 16 schools.

Brown's time put her at the front of the East pack in a large field. The ninth-place team result placed the Thunderhawks in the middle of a 16-school field that drew programs from across the region.

Fellow sophomore Dorothy Specht finished in 22:08.7 at the Little Miami meet. Specht has been one of the steadiest runners on the roster through the early part of the season. Her first three race times have all fallen within approximately 10 seconds of one another, according to the Lakota East athletics department.

That kind of consistency stands out for a sophomore. Three races into the year, Specht has settled into a narrow range that gives the coaching staff a reliable second scorer behind Brown.

Both runners are sophomores, giving the Thunderhawks a young core to build around as the season moves into October and the Greater Miami Conference schedule intensifies.

Troy Twilight Invitational

The Thunderhawks shift to a nighttime setting Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Troy Twilight Invitational in Troy, Ohio. The varsity race is scheduled for 7:10 p.m., according to Troy High School's athletics site.

The annual event, hosted by Troy High School's cross country program, features races run under the lights. Troy Athletics promoted the meet on X, calling it part of the program's yearly schedule.

The nighttime format sets the Troy Twilight apart from the afternoon starts that make up most of the regular-season calendar. For East, it will be a chance to test the young roster in a different environment before conference competition heats up later this fall.
