Lakota East sophomore Alyssa Browne ran 19:12.5 to finish 12th at the Fairmont Firebird Invitational on Sept. 27.

Her performance led the Thunderhawks girls cross country team to 11th place among 19 teams, according to the Lakota East athletics site. The athletics site called Browne's season "outstanding" as the Hawks continue to build toward the Greater Miami Conference Championships this fall.

Browne's 19:12.5 was more than a minute faster than her 20:23.8 at the Little Miami Invitational earlier in September. That Little Miami finish, good for seventh place, earned her the Cincinnati Enquirer's Ohio girls cross-country runner of the week award, announced Sept. 18. She followed that recognition with an even stronger showing at Fairmont.

Meyer's freshman breakthrough

Freshman Lucy Meyer gave the Hawks a second highlight at the invitational. Meyer ran 22:10.2, a result the team described as a breakthrough performance.

The athletics site noted Meyer has delivered consistent results throughout her first high school season and "took another big step forward at Fairmont." No prior personal best was listed for Meyer, but the trajectory has been steady enough for the coaching staff to single her out.

Boys squad also competes

Lakota East was not the only local program racing at the invitational. The Thunderhawks boys squad placed 15th among 21 teams at the same meet, led by junior Jacob Turner, according to a separate recap on the athletics site.

Turner ran a personal-best 16:22.6 to finish 14th overall. That time moved him into the Lakota East all-time top 20 in boys cross country.

What's next

Both the girls and boys teams return to competition Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Northmont XC Invitational.
