West Chester residents and businesses have $9.6 million in unclaimed money sitting in state accounts, according to the Ohio Department of Commerce.
The agency's Division of Unclaimed Funds released data showing zip code 45069 ranks 41st out of 1,462 Ohio zip codes for unclaimed funds. The money belongs to individuals, businesses and organizations in the West Chester area of Butler County, WLWT reported Monday, Sept. 14.
The Division holds $5.4 billion in unclaimed funds statewide. Southwest Ohio accounts for $644.9 million of that total.
West Chester's $9.6 million puts the 45069 zip code sixth among southwest Ohio communities. Nearby Hamilton's 45011 zip code holds $10.7 million, ranking 25th statewide. Mason's 45040 holds $10.4 million at 30th.
The data comes as the state runs a media campaign launched in July featuring Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel, who is urging Ohioans to search for money owed to them. The campaign targets older individuals in particular.
"It only takes a few minutes to check if there is money that belongs to you or your family," Tressel said.
Claims have surged since the campaign launched. The Division paid more than 184,000 claims in fiscal year 2026, which ended June 30, a 168% increase over the prior year, according to the Division's announcement. The total amount returned jumped 72%, reaching $190 million compared with $149.9 million in FY2025.
Division of Unclaimed Funds Superintendent Akil Hardy said the agency is focused on returning money faster. The Division has dropped its W-9 tax form requirement, eliminated the need for notarized claim forms and added nearly two dozen staff members to process claims.
To search, residents can visit unclaimedfunds.ohio.gov and enter their name. If the state holds money in their name, the site generates a claim form that can be submitted by mail or uploaded directly. Claim status can be checked around the clock at the same site.
Because of the surge in filings, the Division asks claimants to allow up to 120 days for review. The Division's customer support line is 614-466-4433.
