Kuechly enshrined in Canton as St. Xavier team watches from the stands

Luke Kuechly is officially a Pro Football Hall of Famer, and the St. Xavier football team was there to see it.

The Evendale native and 2009 St. Xavier graduate was inducted Saturday, Aug. 8, at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, becoming the third Greater Cincinnati high school product enshrined in the Hall. Head coach Steve Specht and the current Bombers squad rode buses to Canton for the ceremony, according to WCPO, two weeks before St. Xavier opens its season Aug. 21 at Lakota West.

"I was lucky to have started playing football right down the street in Cincinnati with the Golden Bears as a fourth grader. And then on to St. Xavier High School with Steve Specht," Kuechly said during his speech, according to the Carolina Panthers' official site. "The St. Xavier Bombers football team is right over here, and I couldn't be happier they're here."

Kuechly's father, Tom, presented him on stage and stood beside him for the unveiling of his bronze bust. Former Panthers teammate Julius Peppers gave Kuechly his gold jacket at a dinner Friday night, Aug. 7, where Specht also connected with his former player.

A Cincinnati legacy

Kuechly joins Roger Staubach, a 1960 Purcell High School graduate inducted in 1985, and Cris Carter, a 1984 Middletown graduate inducted in 2013, as the only Greater Cincinnati high school football products in the Hall. Staubach grew up in Silverton. Carter was born in Troy.

A seven-time Pro Bowl selection and five-time All-Pro linebacker, Kuechly played his entire career with the Carolina Panthers from 2012 to 2019, helping them reach Super Bowl 50 in 2016. He entered the Hall in his second year of eligibility alongside quarterback Drew Brees, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, kicker Adam Vinatieri and running back Roger Craig.

In his speech, Kuechly echoed former Panthers coach Ron Rivera's mantra: "Be where your feet are." He described the joy of football as rooted not in any single win but in competing, studying and preparing alongside teammates, according to Yahoo Sports. He closed with the Panthers' rallying cry: "Keep Pounding."

Kuechly also revealed he has been named the No. 1 game analyst for Netflix's upcoming NFL broadcasts.

What it means for Lakota West's opener

St. Xavier's Aug. 21 season opener at Lakota West already carried weight as a marquee nonconference matchup. The Bombers now head into that Friday night kickoff in Liberty Township having witnessed their most famous alumnus receive football's highest honor.
