Lakota East girls tennis opened Greater Miami Conference play with a 5-0 shutout of Middletown on Monday, Aug. 24, moving the Thunderhawks to 1-0 in league play.

Singles players Emese Watkins, Zara Parson and Scarlett Black each won their matches to anchor the sweep, according to the Lakota East athletics website. The doubles teams completed the shutout, though individual match scores were not reported.

The result was a turnaround for the Liberty Township squad, which entered the week reeling from a 5-0 loss to Anderson on Aug. 17. That defeat dropped the Thunderhawks to 1-2 on the season and marked the kind of lopsided result that can shake a young roster's confidence heading into conference play.

Instead, Watkins, Parson and Black answered with dominant singles performances, and the doubles pairings followed suit to deliver the program's first GMC win of the fall.

The victory improved Lakota East to 2-2 overall. A busy stretch of GMC matches lies ahead for the Thunderhawks this week.

The conference opener carries added weight for a program that has been a consistent contributor to Lakota East's broader athletic success. Athletic Director Jill Meiring said in a May 18 announcement celebrating the school's second consecutive runner-up finish in the GMC All Sports Award standings, "To finish second in the GMC All Sports standings in back-to-back years speaks volumes about the culture of excellence we continue to build at Lakota East."

Girls tennis is one of several fall sports chasing GMC points for the Thunderhawks this season, alongside football, soccer, volleyball and golf.

Lakota East faces additional conference opponents in the coming days as GMC play ramps up across the league.
