An estimated 5,000 fans will fill Firebird Stadium on Friday when Lakota East travels to Lakota West for the 30th meeting in the district rivalry's history.

Lakota West athletic director Austin Rhoads announced the sellout Wednesday, according to WCPO. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The 5,000-fan estimate includes pass holders.

Both teams enter at 1-0 after dominant season openers. The game also opens Greater Miami Conference (GMC) play for both programs.

What's at stake

Lakota West holds an 18-10 advantage in regular-season meetings, according to The Report. But Lakota East snapped the Firebirds' five-game winning streak in the series last season with a 42-28 victory, the Thunderhawks' first win over West since 2018.

Lakota West finished 7-5 in 2025 after consecutive 11-win seasons. Lakota East went 8-4 and reached the second round of the playoffs.

Players to watch

Lakota East junior quarterback Nile Knutson threw three touchdowns in a 41-14 rout of Centerville in Week 1, with the Thunderhawks scoring all 41 points in the first half. As a sophomore last season, Knutson led the GMC with 2,486 passing yards and 22 touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Carter Jones caught 10 passes for 127 yards and a score against Centerville, while senior linebacker Tra'vion Bailey recorded 13 tackles, including nine solo stops.

Lakota West counters with senior running back Kenyon Norman, a Northwestern verbal commit who ran for 116 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries in a 20-7 win over St. Xavier. Senior defensive back Roman Combs, a Purdue verbal commit, grabbed two interceptions in that game. Junior linebacker Judah Blair added a team-high 13 tackles, including seven solo stops.

Senior quarterback Jackson Smith returns for the Firebirds after throwing for 1,959 yards and 20 touchdowns last season.

Coaches' perspective

Lakota East head coach Jon Kitna, the former NFL quarterback in his fourth season leading the Thunderhawks, praised the Firebirds this week.

"They're a well-coached football team that plays hard and does everything well and has some very, very elite players … They're coached great by Tom and his staff … We got to go into there, and we got to play our A game," Kitna said.

Kitna told WCPO reporter Mike Dyer on Tuesday that the rivalry is about community, not animosity, noting that players on both sidelines grew up together and have friends across the field.

Lakota West head coach Tom Bolden, in his 20th season as a head coach, said he told his players to block out the noise. He wants the team focused on improving as a unit rather than getting caught up in the hype.

After the Firebirds' win over St. Xavier, Bolden looked ahead. "Iron sharpens iron," he told The Report on Aug. 22. "We get East back here so we are looking forward to it."

The series dates to 1998. Friday's winner takes an early edge in the GMC race.
