The Lakota West Firebirds will open their 2026 football season against one of Ohio's most decorated programs when St. Xavier visits on Friday, Aug. 21, at 7 p.m.

The game anchors a full opening week for fall sports across both Lakota West and Lakota East, with boys soccer and girls volleyball also beginning Tuesday, Aug. 18, according to The Report Ohio's schedule published by Chris Vogt.

A heavyweight football opener

St. Xavier brings serious credentials to West Chester. The Bombers, coached by Steve Specht, have won four Division I state championships (2005, 2007, 2016, 2020) and reached the state final as recently as December 2025, when they fell to Olentangy Orange 28-14 at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

The last time these two programs met in a season opener was 2018, when St. Xavier shut out Lakota West 34-0 in Cincinnati, according to WCPO coverage of the Bombers' postseason history.

Lakota West's defense returns Cam Thomas, who earned a Cincinnati Enquirer High School Sports Awards nomination for the 2025-26 season. On the other sideline, Specht has never lost a state final in his tenure, which began in 2004.

Lakota East's football opener was not listed in the available opening-week schedule. The Thunderhawks' first confirmed fall action comes on the soccer pitch.

Soccer and volleyball start Tuesday

Both schools' boys soccer programs open on the road Tuesday, Aug. 18, at 7 p.m. Lakota East travels to Little Miami while Lakota West heads to Springboro. Lakota West's Ryan Boyd earned a Cincinnati Enquirer boys soccer nomination for the 2025-26 season.

Lakota West girls volleyball gets the week started earliest, hosting Talawanda on Tuesday, Aug. 18, at 6 p.m.

What both programs bring into fall

Lakota East enters the season after finishing second in the Greater Miami Conference All Sports Award standings for the second consecutive year, trailing only Mason, according to a May 18 announcement on the school's athletics site. Athletic Director Jill Meiring said the back-to-back finishes "speak volumes about the culture of excellence we continue to build at Lakota East."

Lakota West earned spring All-Conference honors across multiple sports and saw boys track and field coach Brenton Eisenhard named GMC Coach of the Year, according to the Firebirds' athletics site.
