No. 5 Lakota West's defense smothered No. 6 St. Xavier for a 20-7 victory Friday, Aug. 21, while Lakota East buried Centerville 41-14 in Liberty Township, giving both programs statement wins to open the 2026 season.

At Firebird Stadium in West Chester Township, Purdue commit Roman Combs picked off two passes and Iowa commit Reilly Newman, a defensive lineman, added a diving interception in St. Xavier territory to fuel a second-half shutout. The Firebirds led 14-7 at halftime after St. Xavier's Aidan Newdigate connected with Logan Von Holle for a second-quarter touchdown. A lightning delay interrupted the game, but Lakota West's defense never wavered.

Freshman kicker Levi King drilled a pair of field goals from approximately 30 yards in the second half to push the lead to 20-7. St. Xavier's best chance to answer ended inches short of a first down at the Lakota West 10-yard line with 6:32 remaining. Karmelo Jordan sealed it with a 55-yard catch-and-run that drained the final minutes.

The win avenges last year's 14-7 loss to St. Xavier, a game that launched the Bombers' run to the Division I state championship game. Head coach Tom Bolden, entering his eighth season leading the Firebirds, had said before the opener that he scheduled tough early tests on purpose.

"You better find out earlier than later what your weaknesses are," Bolden said in an Aug. 19 preview with The Report. "The good teams, the good coaches, they'll expose your weaknesses."

St. Xavier exposed very little. Three interceptions and a goal-line stand told the story.

In Liberty Township, No. 9 Lakota East left no doubt against Centerville, scoring all 41 points in the first half behind junior quarterback Nile Knutson's 268-yard, three-touchdown passing performance. Senior wide receiver Carter Jones hauled in 11 catches for 117 yards and a touchdown, earning TriState Football's Friday Night Star honors.

The Thunderhawks piled up 387 total yards and forced three turnovers before the break. Head coach Jon Kitna told The Report on Aug. 19 that he was counting on his defensive linemen to disrupt opponents ahead of the opener. They delivered, helping East force Centerville into mistakes throughout the first half.

Knutson, who threw for 2,486 yards and 22 touchdowns as a sophomore in 2025, picked up where he left off despite Lakota East losing its top skill-position players from last year's 8-4 squad. Jones looks poised to be his primary target again after the Thunderhawks graduated running back Ryder Hooks and tight end P.J. MacFarlane.

Both programs now turn their attention to the rivalry. Lakota West hosts Lakota East on Friday, Aug. 28, at Firebird Stadium.
