Lakota West's volleyball season ended Wednesday, Oct. 28, with a five-set loss to Fairfield in a Division I district semifinal. Fairfield rallied from a set down at Lakota East High School to win 3-2, the Journal-News reported.
The loss ended a 12-11 season for Lakota West. Fairfield then advanced to face two-time defending state champion Seton in the district final Saturday, Oct. 31, at the same Lakota East gym.
Seton swept Fairfield 25-10, 25-12, 25-16 to claim the district title and improve to 24-0, The Report Ohio reported.
How the semifinal unfolded
Lakota West had swept Fairfield 25-16, 25-21, 25-10 during the regular season on Aug. 25. The Firebirds finished 6-3 in Greater Miami Conference (GMC) play, while Fairfield went 5-4, according to the Journal-News.
The semifinal rematch looked different. Lakota West took the first set 25-20 and won the fourth 25-18, but Fairfield captured the second set 25-23, the third 26-24 and the decisive fifth.
Lakota West coach Ali Hile credited Fairfield's defensive improvement as a major difference from the regular-season meeting, according to the Journal-News. Hile said the Firebirds also faced challenges adjusting to lineup changes entering the postseason.
Seton claims district title
The Saints have won 78 of their last 80 matches and haven't lost since September 2024, according to The Report Ohio. Charley Moeddel leads the Girls Greater Catholic League in kills, and senior Kenna Meibers gives Seton another threat at the net.
Fairfield coach Jessi Grimes praised Seton's program after the district final, according to the report. Fairfield finished 10-14 but earned a Division I district runner-up medal.
Senior Peyton Smith, Fairfield's lone first-team All-GMC selection and one of three seniors on the roster, said she had no regrets about her final season, according to The Report Ohio. Fairfield carried four freshmen and four sophomores on varsity this year.
Grimes said the tournament experience would build momentum heading into next season, according to the report.
