Why prices keep climbing
Ohio drivers paid roughly $2.97 per gallon in July 2025, according to EIA data. The U.S.-Iran conflict that began in late February 2026 sent prices soaring: Ohio's monthly average peaked at $4.63 in May 2026 before easing to $4.01 in June 2026 as brief ceasefire talks cooled oil markets. By early-to-mid July 2026, AAA data reported by WBNS-10TV in Columbus pegged Ohio's average at approximately $3.71, below the national average of $3.84 at the same time.
That relief was short-lived. The national average surged to $3.98 on Friday, July 17, 2026, up 10 cents in a single week after ceasefire talks collapsed and military strikes resumed, according to AAA.
"While there were ceasefire talks, which were able to get prices down, it seems like those have fallen apart, at least at the moment," said Shawn Tempesta, an AAA spokesperson. "And with that, the price of crude oil is flirting with $80 per barrel right now."
U.S. gasoline inventories stood at 210 million barrels in mid-July 2026, the lowest level since 2012, according to CNN. Ohio's gas tax of 38.5 cents per gallon remains lower than neighboring Pennsylvania's 57.6 cents, which helps keep the state average below the national figure.
