West Chester Police have fielded crashes and complaints about e-bikes, mopeds, golf carts, and mini bikes in recent months. With the summer weather, more of these vehicles are on the streets than ever before. Here's what Ohio law — and local rules — actually say about what you can and can't do with these vehicles.

E-Bikes

E-bikes don't require a license. But the rules depend on the class.

Class 1 and 2 can be operated by anyone. Class 1 has pedal assist only and tops out at 20 mph. Class 2 adds a throttle (so you can ride without pedaling) but also caps at 20 mph.

Class 3 is faster — up to 28 mph — but riders must be at least 16 years old.

Helmets are required for all riders and passengers. E-bikes must be clearly labeled with their class. And they can't use bike trails reserved for non-motorized bikes unless local law allows it.

E-bike operators must follow traffic laws.

Mopeds and Motorized Bikes

Mopeds have a 50cc motor limit and can't exceed 20 mph. Operators need a license — 14- and 15-year-olds can get one, and 16-year-olds can ride with a regular operator's license.

Riders under 18 must wear a helmet with a chin strap. No passengers allowed.

Gas-Powered Scooters and Pocket Bikes

These are classified as motor vehicles. Operators must be at least 16 with a motorcycle endorsement, and the vehicle must be registered, licensed, and insured.

Golf Carts

Not permitted on West Chester Township public roads.
