West Chester Township has awarded $1,000 to $10,000 grants to 35 small businesses for exterior improvements since the Spark Grant program launched, with 17 projects completed so far in 2026.

The Community Development Department administers the grants, which fund painting, signage, awnings, lighting, and outdoor gathering spaces. Privately owned businesses with 20 or fewer full-time employees can apply, as can tenants with property owner approval.

Cut Ups Salon owner Howard Neal heard about the program through a client of his. He used his Spark Grant to enhance his store's curb appeal with a refreshed sign and new shutters. He says he is very happy with the results and the support.

"Small businesses are at the heart of our community," Board of Trustees President Ann Becker said. "These grants help them grow their business while also enhancing the curb appeal of our key business corridors."

Recent completed projects include a shared parking lot revitalization by Welling & Co. Jewelers and West Chester Family Dentistry, the new exterior sign and shutters at Cut Ups Salon, an illuminated sign at The Donut Hole by Milton's Donuts, and exterior paint at Coterie Lounge.

WreckTech Auto Body and Paint also got a fresh coat of paint.

WreckTech owner Mark Briscoe returned to the auto body business last September after a five-year absence, buying the property at 9019 Princeton Glendale Road. With his children Zach and Emily, he gutted the building for major renovations.

Less than 10 months later, the transformation is striking. The family used its Spark Grant to pay for the exterior paint—the final touch on a complete overhaul.

"We're truly grateful for the partnership," Briscoe said. "It stands in stark contrast to other municipalities I worked with on my previous shops."

All grants for 2026 are spoken for, but business owners can check the Township website for details on future grant cycles.
